Spring Training Updates (8 Mar 08)

Whole heap of news coming out of todays spring training. Plus I found another player doing the rounds!

  • Trent Oeltjen, who was previously signed to the Twins, has been training with the Diamondbacks as a non-roster invitee. It was only when I checked up to see how the Padres had gone today that I noticed his name in the boxscore. Looks like he has had a pretty good start to spring training. He has had 6 at bats in 6 games, with 2 hits and 2 runs for a .333 avg.
  • Chris Snelling and the Phillies received a bit of a flogging today from the Tampa Bay Rays, who have been running hot this spring. Snelling had one at bat for no hits, and his spring avg is steady at .156
  • Rich Thompson had his first outing of the year, with 2 innings in the Angels' win against the White Sox.
  • Further to the news from the other day about the Braves' injury concerns, there has been some worry about Peter Moylan's elbow, as well as Rafael Soriano's arm. However, the Braves arent showing any signs of worry, stating that their top two closing men are just suffering from some early season irritation
  • Ryan Rowland-Smith had another outing today with the Mariners. He finished the last 2 outs of the 4th inning after the Cubs took 4 runs. The Mariners pen kept the Cubs scoreless for the rest of the game
  • Justin Huber was back in action today, drawing a walk and scoring a run, and striking out in his other plate appearance. Huber's spring record looks good, with an avg of .506 from 4 games.
